The Art Institute makes an unhurried indoor date, and the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, with free admission, is lovely from spring to fall. In the suburbs, the downtowns of Evanston, Oak Park and Naperville are full of easy places for coffee. For a day out later on, Starved Rock State Park is about an hour and a half southwest of the city.

Dating through a Chicago winter

Winter here is long, and the holidays can be the hardest time of year after a loss. The short days can be when you most want someone to talk to. Messages and a video call are a gentle way to get to know someone when the weather keeps you indoors, and a warm café or a museum makes a good first meeting in January.

City and suburbs

Getting across Chicagoland can take an hour, so think about the Metra lines and the expressways when you set your distance. A city member and a suburban one often meet somewhere in between, which keeps a first date fair and short. Downstate members may want to widen their distance to take in the nearest larger town.

Downstate Illinois

Outside Chicagoland, life moves at a different pace. In Springfield, the Lincoln Home National Historic Site and the old state capitol make an interesting afternoon. Peoria has its riverfront along the Illinois River, and Champaign and Urbana have the cafés and concerts of a college town. Distances are longer here, so a first date is often lunch in a town halfway between you.
